The Decision 2.0: LeBron’s Options

2012-2013 NBA Most Valuable Player Award

The longer LeBron James takes to sign a new contract, the more likely it seems that he’ll be playing for a new team. With the Houston Rockets aggressively pursuing Chris Bosh, the days of the Big Three appear to be in increasing danger of being over after four seasons and four trips to the Finals. However, it’s difficult to imagine Bosh making a decision before LeBron has finalized his. With that in mind, let’s look at the possible teams LeBron could suit up for in 2014-15 and beyond.

The Favorite: Miami Heat

Staying in Miami is still the most likely of any scenarios. LeBron is scheduled to meet face-to-face with Pat Riley this week. If Riley can work his magic like he has in the past, LeBron could walk out of that meeting with a new contract agreed upon. A Heat team bringing back the Big Three would be easy favorites for the conference finals no matter who else was on the roster. LeBron has lived comfortably and happily in Miami for the last four years and won two championships. Don’t count the Heat out just yet.

Broussard’s Favorite: Cleveland Cavaliers (yeah right)

Although I feel pretty strongly that LeBron would never rejoin the Cavs as long as Dan Gilbert owns them, there has been an increasing amount of buzz surrounding a return home for James. Cleveland has the cap space flexibility to offer LeBron a max contract, along with Kyrie Irving and number one pick Andrew Wiggins. But come on, this letter.

The Extremely Dark Horse: Phoenix Suns

There’s no concrete reason to believe LeBron might sign in Phoenix besides the fact that his agent met with the team (and the other mentioned teams). However, they have a very talented and young roster that nearly won 50 games in the West last year. With plenty of cap space, Phoenix could afford to add James to the mix. Living in Arizona with the NBA’s best training staff wouldn’t be a shabby move for LeBron. Still highly unlikely.

The Texas Two: Houston Rockets & Dallas Mavericks

Both of these teams also met with LeBron’s agent last week, and both would kill to sign James. It doesn’t appear as if he’s seriously considering signing with either, but both have very good rosters. However, moving out West means competing with San Antonio and the Thunder as well as several other tough squads.

The Perpetual Candidate: Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers have plenty of cap space and even more interest in signing LeBron to join the rapidly aging Kobe Bryant. That’s pretty much the extent of what they offer.
